We're Not in Kansas

But you would think we were with all of the tornado warnings! The rain from the weeks before I can handle, but the tornado warnings are terrifying!! 8 have happened in the neighboring towns in the past 3 days. We have 72 hour kits packed and ready to go at any second. The Elder's here saw one on Saturday night a couple of miles from their home so we sought shelter at the church. Today we are definitely not going to have one because it is too cold but I've heard tomorrow is probable. It keeps us on our toes!
It was also 108 degrees this week too! That was HOT! So we have changed our contacting time to later at night and we try to teach our appointments during the hottest time of the day. Jose Luis is sold as ever! Pray for him that he can withstand coffee and chewing tobacco! His baptism is set for this Saturday :) We bought him Pero, grapefruit juice, vitamin C, toothpaste, and a toothbrush, so he should be good! We are going on day 4 and everything is great! He is 76 and hilarious. He laughs his head off at our jokes every day. We teach him very boldy and very simply :) "No mas cafe!" We found both a paleta man and a dulce lady this week! We have the hook-ups in Taco Town. So now we always carry a little money on us for our treats! Best moment is dulce lady is our former and we knocked and she is like "I'm busy! I'm busy!" Then we said "No, no, we are here to buy candy!" "Oh come on in!!" By the end she was patting my back, touching my hair, and begging us to come back! And she sells Duvalin and my favorite Mexico suckers. All for 25 cents. (Yeah I'm pretty sure her business is illegal pero esta bien.) Our recent convert Carlos also lives in a very hidden, very illegal apartment complex, disguised by lots of hoarder stuff. But it is better than his last place he lived in so that is great!! The bugs are really starting to come out here! Like eating us alive and so Off! is on the list of things to buy today. People continue to be placed in our path as we pray to find more investigators!! And they are coming to church too! One Toby just got out of Prison after 25 years and then yesterday professed his love to me! It was no buneo so he is getting handed over to the elders! He said he knows I was sent to Portales for a reason. He kept asking for my 1st name and I just kept saying "Hermana" :) I love it here!! I can't believe there is only 2 more weeks left in this transfer!! I never wanna leave or lose my native companion!! This work is my favorite! I love you all!! xoxo con amor, Hermana Slade
